Rendezvous der Träume. Surrealismus und deutsche Romantik

Ausstellung vom 13.06.2025 bis 12.10.2025 in der Hamburger Kunsthalle

"Rendezvous of Dreams – Surrealism and German Romanticism"

Hamburger Kunsthalle | 13 June – 12 October 2025

Beginning in summer 2025, the Hamburger Kunsthalle will present the major exhibition Rendezvous of Dreams. Surrealism and German Romanticism (13 June – 12 October 2025).

Marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of international Surrealism, the exhibition brings together more than 180 surrealist masterpieces by artists including Max Ernst, Meret Oppenheim, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Valentine Hugo, Toyen, André Masson, Victor Brauner, Paul Klee, and many others.

The exhibition explores one of Surrealism’s most important intellectual affinities: its connection to German Romanticism, with its dream worlds, nocturnal imagery, poetic sensibility, and deeply felt relationship with nature. These connections are revealed through both direct homages and thought-provoking juxtapositions with more than 60 Romantic masterworks, including paintings by Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge.

In total, the show presents around 250 works — paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and objects — by 55 surrealist and 25 Romantic artists, drawn from over 70 private and public collections in the US, Mexico, and across Europe, as well as the museum’s own holdings.

The exhibition is organized by the Hamburger Kunsthalle in first-time collaboration with the Centre Pompidou – Musée national d’art moderne, Paris, which is lending several extraordinary works. As part of the Surrealism centennial, the Kunsthalle and Centre Pompidou are also partnering with the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (Brussels), the Fundación MAPFRE (Madrid), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the exhibition will be shown in adapted versions tailored to each location’s cultural and historical context.
